When I first decided to go “legit” on WV and make it not like, a one-time record thing, I made myself a list of every band I’d love to do. I was able to work with a lot of my heroes and a lot of my biggest “wants” - I mean, we got Infinite Death and MAHCIU, so even if nothing else I consider it a success beyond my wildest dreams! I’ve always thought about WV in the context of some of my other favorite labels - Dog Knights does scream and emo. UL does tech and core. I feel like all the best labels have that kind of dichotomy; you can see the crossover and the roots of each genre in the other. I’ve never shied away from the trendy 2010s facebook stuff, its the yang to my tech grind yang. You get a little Destroyer Destroyer, but then you also get your deathcore and beatdown. Perfect harmony! And when I was making my list of “all time greatest” downtempo and downtempo adjacent bands, the top of the list was Yuth Forever. But then CLOSE #2 was ‘sabella, lmao. So here we are with arguably the best kinda-downtempo band of all time! It’s DOG DAZE and its on vinyl! Yay!
This album was such an incredible point in time. Truly the crescendo of a fully matured genre. All their contemporaries like Mugshot and Kaonashi went on to big label activities, but ‘sabella packed it in. They’ve always been super mysterious and cool, so its not lost on me what a huge honor it is to work with them on this! If you’ve been a fan for a long time, you’ll know that sabella NEVER does represses or reprints of ANY of their material. Did one run of pins. One run of CDs. One run of tapes. We share a very similar mindset on our approach to this stuff, so I’m elated to work with a band of this caliber that truly “gets” the WV thing on such a spiritual level, haha. Truly a generational album.
The art on this release was a tough line to walk to be honest. The DD “dog” is so iconic in its own right, that even though my instincts were to totally depart, Nick and the rest of the guys really had a vision for how they wanted this to look in 2024. All of the hues and palette from the original CD packaging were brought in throughout the whole new layout. Every panel re-created with just tone software new texture created by BOOKMOUTH. Kai brought a bunch of material quality to the layout, and this release has a gatefold lyric book too! Tons of content, all prepared in a painstaking way, directed by the band. I think this is a great representation of what DD is, and its still tweaked enough to have that WV charm, haha. I know you’re going to dig it!
Not that the audio needed much, but Zach really did an incredible job of tightening up this mix even more. The low end has so much definition and rumble, and there’s this subtle shift in vocal presentation that really p its it more forward where it belonged (imo). Fun fact - this album was originally made with an A side/B side split in mind, but was just never pressed. You’ll finally be able to hear it in all its glorious pacing as they intended!
