Its been five years in the making, but here it is! The last of the original WV75. The end of an era, and the signaling of a new one! It’s my pleasure to present the absolute time capsule of an album “Live and Let Die” - the collected works of none other than FEIGN!
Sometimes I don’t have a lot to editorialize on, because sometimes the band is the NAME BRAND band. Like, they are the reason (well, maybe that first Traitors EP tbh) that all the downtempo tropes are now tropes; at the time it was just a mind expansion though. We were IN it and everyone on Facebook was eating good! I don’t want to say they “pioneered” but they were certainly at the forefront. They not only exalted the formula, but they were the once who refined the original recipe. False Hope was such an exercise in Texas Brutality its a big part of the reason why everyone in this niche is so obsessed with Texas downtempo. They were doing it so differently than their Chicago and Florida counterparts - there was more two steps, the production wasn’t quite as slick, and honestly they just went lower. It wasn’t mids, it was all Sockwell kind of spoken-y lows, with these harrowing gutturals thrown in. Just an absolute monster of a vocal performance. Still holds up to this day!
In keeping with the original releases, Ben is back AGAIN for the last of the OGWV. Seems fitting to have the man that did their original covers come back and do the new one, and even more so on a WV title that is such a huge transition point. Ben absolutely demolished the hybrid of the two covers, and I’m so so pleased to have him on yet another big ass beatdown 2xLP set, haha. Thats right! Its a big 2xLP! Yay!
With this release, I’ve hit my Mount Rushmore of downtempo/beatdown masterpieces. Barring Traitors and Yuth (which thankfully both got pressed anyway) I think the Feign/Outlaw/Extortionist/Crook/(Upcoming) combo really says everything I have to say about the genre. Thanks again for indulging me!
