Mathtober is still kicking! Its always such a treat when I get to do a BRAND NEW band to debut a BRAND NEW ALBUM that is created with WV in mind and designed around being released in this way. An honor. This one maybe even more cool than usual just given what type of materiel it is, and everything that has gone in to it here. I think we have the the PSYCHO-FRAME equalivent of math on our hands here. What happens when a bunch of *not children* make an earnest, real effort to make some sass revival? You have girlsbeinggirls! It’s here and its insane! Maybe go give the debut single a listen first (its up now) an then come back and listen to me pontificate for an hour!
The whole aesthetic of this thing and the context of its release is what makes it so impactful. We’ve had no shortage of phoned-in Low effort cybergrind. An abundance of slapdash throwaway joke projects that people who were 5 years old when Myspace was around think is “awesome”. I think GBG is the concerted effort of two elder scenesters to create somethign nostalgic and also so so new. It’s not worship - its elevated. There’s a huge difference between P-F and like, GOG. Both are “revival deathcore” but they approach it in very different ways. GBG leans in to its roots and takes the tropes and reimagines them for a modern context. From a production standpoint this is the most blown out and evil sounding thing I’ve ever heard. NO ONE does mix/master like this besides Hordeman, and I really do think he’s ahead of the curve and shares a lot of production preference sensibilities with me. Isn’t afraid to take a risk. Downpour did an insane job on this - its literally evil 2 O’Clock Girlfriend. The production is HUGE and it hits those crazy cyber elements at times, but never uncanny valley territory.
