Pinch me! I’m dreaming! I can't believe that I get to once again work with one of my major early life influences -Malodorous is here with the mighty AmaranthineRedolence! Absolutely the entire first wave of internet project MySpace fake slam and brutal grind. A real genre-bender of a debut that STILL has a lot of relevance almost 20 years later. The epitome of early 2000s experimentation. And yeah, some breakdowns too!
This album is so interesting because it was right at the front of like, fake slam. It’s like how Cloacal Kiss isn’t a cybergrind band, but like, kind of? How an a band be slam and grind? How can something have programmed drums but not register as cyber? How many Venn diagrams do I need to draw?? You were either there or you weren’t;t tbh. Were you a Big Chocolate guy? Were you on Youtube? Like, there was a class of music fan who even at the time was sniffing out the outer edges of online extremity and if you got far enough in, you got to Amaranthine Redolence.
Kai over at Lab.13 took these insane panels and absolutely took huge risk with the gold. Paid off tbh. Not what I would have ever thought, but something about the gold makes this transcend in to like, true fitted hat/grill slam territory which feels so appropriate. It's SO logo-centric. All of this cool cyber-sigilism. Just an insane layout. Daemorph actually did one huge painting for the front and back, and then two more for the inserts. I’m just addicted to spending thousands of dollars on paintings that are just for a lyric sheet, haha.
Of course, all of this is wrapped in an astounding remaster from Zach over at Third Eye, and pressed on maybe the most aggressively insane variants I’ve ever seen. Gotta Groove and Wax Mage went crazy on these! Like, you see the album art - you know the color palette is about to be insane.
