Extra Large Kids - Galactical Celebration

Variant

I will not tolerate the hivemind anymore after this release. For too long we as a community have been discounting the efforts of Design the Skyline. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now. I want you to apologize by checking out Galactical Celebration by Extra Large Kids!

That’s right! The last great release of May Is none other than seminal mathcore classic Galactical Celebration by XLK. For those of you unaware, XLK was basically proto-Design The Skyline. It’s the more raw, less refined, even more brutal version that checks all the right boxes. The fact that we aren’t including this album on the lists of throwback greats is APPALING.

What is it you’re looking for from your turn-of-the-2000s pseudo-deathcore band? Is it noodle riffs? Check. Dizzying start/stop time signature fuckery? Check. Guttural breakdowns? Check. Mallcore vocals and autotuned highs? Fringe bangs? Whitebelts? Check, Check, check. It’s all the culture consolidated in to one little blurb of an EP that set the stage for everything Design the Skyline would go on to do. I hope that with a sense of nostalgia and fun, we can look back at this stuff with a bit of renewed interest and judge a bit less harshly. Everything old is new again. If you bought that newest SYSC split and don’t like DTS, I’m not even sure what to say to you!

Historical context aside (and there is lots, I’ll say it again, XLK is the culture) this one checks a ton of other boxes for me as well. It’s just so much fun, and the OG art was a staple on blogspots back then. If you can’t find something in here that you enjoy, you might just be a grumpy old man.

It’s been a ton of fun working with James and the XLK boys on this one. Everything about it is something that I like to hit with WV. It’s got iconic art, amazing songs, and it’s a rare release that was never available physically. So pumped that the first physical release is going to be some good looking wax!

Speaking of good looking, art was demolished byBen Hoagland Love it or hate it, I think it hits every element and is just so funny. An incredible homage in 100% Ben style, haha. Obsessed.

On an even more impressive front, Zach at Third Eye Studios really stepped up on this one. He took what were essentially some never mixed/mastered demo tracks and turned them in to polished album material. It’s INSANE. If you’ve never heard XLK, you’re in for a treat! And if you have heard them before, you’re about to have your mind blown!
