Waking The Cadaver - Reminisce Cruelty

Variant
I don’t even know how this happened but next up for insta season is LITERALLYWaking The Cadaver! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

I don’t know if I need to necessarily wax poetic about the forefathers of false slam. The guardians of gore grove. The Sultans of shredded wheat. What is there to say that hasn’t been said already? WTC were absolutely one of if not THE most formative bands of the early 2000s. Hard stop. If you were on YouTube or participated in any kind of internet music culture around the turn of the millennium, you’ve seen a fake lyric video of misheard lyrics from Chased Through the Woods. This collection of material is ICONIC.

This is another one that you all have been dead wrong about for so long. WTC has been a scene punching bag for a decade, and now that Authority dropped and just smacks you all love WTC? Like can we all agree that you were wrong in 2006 and those croaked vocals actually did awaken something in you? I think early WTC is so important and cultural and if you disagree I’m just not interested in hearing it!

I would have literally done a 12” release for just the 2006 promo. Chased Through the Woods and Blood Spattered are the uncontested kings of the myspace profile song. They’re culture incarnate. But being that the band rules and Zach over at Third Eye Studios is a genius, we were able to scrape up enough material for a full two-sided LP “early discog” release! The 2006 Promo, tons of pre-pros, demo versions of album songs and even a live track! This thing is expansive and hits basically all their non-album material. I’m so incredibly stoked that we were able to track down great quality (in some cases truly lossless) versions of all these tracks and give them a proper mastering job. If you bought that CD demo-discog a few years ago, you’ll recognize the track list and know exactly what I mean about the audio, haha.

Zach was able to really bring these tracks back to life, and it’s not hyperbole when I say that you’ve never heard them like this before. I know many of you are probably like me and only every heard them on youtube, or as endlessly repackaged blogspot RARs. This is no joke, and I think you’re really going to enjoy hearing these with fresh ears!

Aural pleasure is not all that you’re in for though – this audio is packaged in some of my favorite art to date - with an even better story attached. So many small details at play to make this the most allusive WTC piece of work to date I think! If you remember the original art, it was that black background image of a dismemberment on a pier. That was fully readapted by Aditia Wardhana for Brutal Mind, and I think it is literally a better art re-imagining than most WV releases. With re-release art that strong, where do you go from there? Motherfucking Par Olofsson

This round of art is a departure from the gore and the “dismemberment on a pier” motif of the demo and subsequent re-release. It’s an expanded view taking us in to the future where our pier woman crawls in to the forest and begins the decomposition process. Sprawling fungi, different backdrop (and you’ll notice the iconic pier in the background of this full 24x12 continuous piece) really kind of sets a different tone that I love. Mike and Don even let me use this logo which is just such a dream come true, haha. Layout was done by Kai at Lab 13 and all of his color and style choices make this one of the most deliberate layouts so far. Lyrics, photos, and everything waterlogged and covered with mold. It’s really a textural experience!

I think this whole package is mature, refined, and totally full of asides. It’s the definitive WTC early discog, and I’m so pumped I got to work so closely with the band to bring this to life. I think it really captures a lot of slam charm, while still being wholly WV. I think you’re really going to love every aspect of it! WTC was/is such a crucial band and I can’t overstate what an honor it is to get to work with them on this!

This one-time pressing is limited to 305 copies across five variants:

I can’t think of too many releases that are both SO WV and so NOT WV. WTC was at the forefront of slam/groove with an internet spin. It’s fun, self-aware, and totally cultural. I know I’ve wanted WTC on vinyl for as long as I’ve been collecting and I’m just so pleased to be able to put out some of my favorite material from the time period. And if you haven’t already, go buy a copy of their new album over at Unique Leader as well! More vinyl!
