Substructure - Monolith

I can think of maybe three Djent albums that changed the world, and one of them is the winner by a huge margin. Thats what we have here today. The shining jewel of a bygone era. A love letter to the early 2010s and everything that was happening in Facebookland. A true time capsule that also happens to be more modern than a lot of its contemporaries 10 years in the future. It’s Monolith by the almighty Substructure! It’s here! Let us reminisce!

I don’t know how much context Ineed to provide, but I guess if your age starts with a “1” then I should give a little bit of background. As a cultural counterpoint/reaction to the raw+home recorded nature of like, deathcore and the like - people started putting noise gates all over everything. It was squeaky clean. Polished. Absolutely the most digital, quantized, riff-built perfect facsimile of what you could consider metal. Digital tools were new, and just like cavemen experimenting with what they could do with fire, the 2010 Facebook man was determined to make an onomatopoeia in to a genre. It was space. It was plural names. It was noise gate and it took internet music fandom by storm for like, exactly 5 years haha.

Substructure did the Djenty “single word band name” thing. The space-y cover. Like, they were one of the main characters that mades these tropes a trope. Like, you have to remember that before it was played out, it WAS interesting the first time we say Neo go in to bullet time. Like, things are iconic for a reason, and Substructure are one of the ones who made Djent the phenomenon it was.

This album has been completely reworked from he top down. In addition to Zach just absolutely demolishing the remasters we were also able to find the original exports to start with. If you're like me, you’ve been listening to this on YouTube for more than a decade now, haha. You’re going to flip when you hear this!

In another fun twist, the art was handled by none other than Joey Harrell. He’s not only an accomplished digital artist, but he was also in the band! What the heck! He was able to work pretty extensively in Blender to like, generate and render a real modeled black hole of this art? Or something?? Dude was talking to me about like theoretical black hole mechanics and I’m just sitting looking at the art like “hell yeah rainbow black hole!” But I do love the opportunity to work with the band themselves for art and layout - I think its a great representation of their music as a whole, and I’m amped Joey did a great job!
