SIKE! You Fools! You absolute buffoons! Can you believe you though that Weeping’s newest album “Spiritual barbarism” WASN’T a WV release? Feel pretty silly now huh! Well that cat is out of the bag and even though you might have seen a few rumblings about this monster of an album, I promise you haven’t seen it all yet! I’m climbing out on to yet another branch of the extreme metal phylogenetic tree, and I’m SO excited to bring you what might be my personal AOTY. NO one isdoing it like Weeping right now - and if you thought you had them figured out after their first album, THINK AGAIN! AH!
Having been so ingratiated in to the Digital Ghost pipeline, and having so many bands appear in the Alex Hordeman cinematic universe is truly such a blessing. I remember it as if it was March 9th, 2024 - HARM was nearing completion, and I was talking with Alex about how great it was and how I was so indebted to him for being such a great musician. We were chatting and he happened to bring up that two of the guys from HARM had another band with an album that had been completed for like a year that they had just been sitting on. We made a group chat, and the rest was history. WEEPING made its way over to Wax Vessel.
Audio is once again a huge fucking slab from Digital Ghost and Brandan Lopez/Hunter Young. Its no accident that like, every album you’re hearing from WV recently has DG involved in some way. Finger on the pulse for sure! The quality of bands coming out of there is just insane!
This release is a unique one because while it is wholly a WV new release, done in the WV way, there were a lot of fun considerations made along the way! For instance, the band already had some PUBLIC DOMAIN artwork made up that they loved (kill me), so what did we do? Got Jon Zig aka Skingraver to like, do a painting of an expanded scene like “over” those panels. If you put them side by side, almost identical! But this is a spooky DM painting! Just sprawling panels of insane sacrilegious artwork in a gross color palette. Absolutely loved how this turned out and I’m so happy that it should carry on the spirit of how they were thinking to originally release it.
In addition to the art, I have to give a huge thanks to Kai at Lab.13 for the new meatball logo. It’s so sick in fact that Frozen Screams went back and added it to the tapes, haha. Just such an amazing logo and I love forcing bands to become more and more illegible and weird! Layout on this one was handled by Downpour Design as Alex is effectible in the band on this one, haha. I think all the religious motifs throughout the packaging are going to be really fun to explore, and Alex did an insane job of making it like, very not typical. You’re really going to dig it!
