Ok! Listen up! I’m a whole new man now. I’m in my DAZE era. I’m going Ephyra mode. I’m putting yet6 another revival feather in my cap, and this time its just actualno-frills (ok, some frills) 90s-riffs metallic hardcore. And like, not in the Throatruiner metallic sense, but in the “mosh riffs and guitar solos like actually more hardcore adjacent than metal core adjacent” type of way! It’s none other than WARSPAWN and I know you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew you knew it was coming!
If you’ve been paying attention to the extended Wax Vessel universe, you’ll have seen that Whittle (formerly of PSYCHO-FRAME and Vatican) has this new project, and that tapes (and the EP) had just dropped. I respect the desire to have a rollout for the people, but when Hunter was telling me about the project before it dropped, I could NOT stress enough how interest I was/am. We kind of worked the rollout details with Jeff (who did the Tapes/initial drop with Blackheaven) and now here we are for the Wax Vessel part! Amazing! Everyone gets what they want, there are tapes already so you can leave me alone! Anyway!
Immaculate Objection is incredibly focused and mature. I think will be proven to be a crossover hit. As with all projects from dudes who have been in 1000 amazing bands, its less of a “debut” and more of a “here is how I have been envisioning doing this project”. Its got this late 80s/early 90s crossover feel but it rooted in current year. Its revivalism without the pastiche. It has so much Digital Ghost flair. So much vocal prowess. It’s in this weird uncanny valley of hardcore where like, its got an insane amount of polish for a debut little EP here? Are you sure its a debut?
As with all releases, my favorite part of this was expanding on the original art/logo/packaging/theme in my own way here. Like you can tell the original is a Kai logo (because it rocks so hard) but I needed something more. I had to Kai logo the Kai logo - so here’s a cool little alt! The first cover was very “warspawn” and I went more on the “immaculate objection” than the “warspawn” with mine. Just suffering in hell. A refined palette. Four bespoke paintings done in oil pastels. I didn’t;t want it to feel “lo fi” or like, a tape layout you know? Some might call it overdone - no one has every accused me of not being a maximalist!
You already know that all the audio was handled by Digital Ghost. Sounds great now, will sound even better on vinyl!
