Misericordiam - 20 Years Of Misericordiam

Variant

It’s been SO tough to keep this one under wraps, haha. Literally the kings of a whole era. The guttural deathcore heavyweights. The legendary Misericordiam. Let me paint you a picture: its 2006. You’ve heard about this “deathcore” thing thats been growing. You’re fresh off a YouTube breakdown video and your trying to fid a song about a hefty bag? You just don’t remember - the song names are too long. The gutturals toobeefy. But you go over to The Gauntlet or a blogspot and you find it - an album cover with a big propeller thing on it. Or perhaps something more sinister with a big spike logo. In either case, you’ve no become aquatinted with one of the first and best true deathcore heavyweights. Misericordiam is here!

Their discography is perfect. The perfect arc. Like just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you literally have Unanimity which was a masterclass is in the with up. They for the most part dropped the (what we would call in 2024, dated) aspects - the vocals are more refined, and there is more of an emphasis on riffs than breakdowns. It’s more of a brutal death album - albeit one played by a deathcore band. So still just so much fun. And that is how I would wrap up Misericordiam - they’re a brutal death band that got caught up in the deathcore wars. Too soon to be like, a Hot Topic deathcore band - too brutal and hard around the edges. They were too forward thinking to be truly heralded along with their death contemporaries. Another band killed by the deathcore label, haha.

But! Even having broken up after Unanimity, we’ve been left with a mark on the history of the genre, and have a scene thats been molded by Misericordiam. Ask anyone in a band with any amount of deathcore influence - they’ve heard of Misericordiam, and they fuck with them heavy! Their whole discos (specifically the latter) is SO fast and SO brutal. It’s these death metal old heads that killed Misericordiam! I hope that we can take a fresh listen in 2024 and really appreciate what we had here back in LITERALLY 2004-2007 haha. They paid the ultimate price - release a GOATED deathcore album (thin line, iconic) and then release their next thing which is not deathcore so all the deathcore kids get mad, and all the death metal guys go “you’re a deathcore band!” The only band that got out alive was JFAC, haha. Could have been Misericordiam!

Now for the art, I really wanted to pay my respects to their deathcore roots and just do something SO deathcore. Big monster? You got it! City being destroyed? You bet! Its a ton of callback to the big propeller thing on Thin Line, and that theme has been expanded throughout. This big gatefold has 6 panels of custom art by none other than James fucking Bousema! The band is from Vegas, James is from Vegas, it just make sense! You might recognize a lot of his work from the likes of Frozen Soul and and Wizards of the Coast, lmao. So happy to finally have a project to work with him on!

Audio was handled by Zach as always, and its YET AGAIN another monster. A treasure trove of HQ remasters. Its a HUGE 2xLP discography with EVERYTHING. What a treat!
