Cholera - The Answer To Infection

Variant
What would a nostalgia label be without Cholera?!

That’s right! Kicking it off is none other than the formative classic The Answer to Infection! It is my absolute highest honor to christen insta season with what is arguably one of the best melodic deathcore albums of all time.

It felt like in the early 2000s everyone was doing this “melodic riffs with no set song structure and also sick breakdowns” thing. As Blood Runs Black comes to mind as the most popular version of this, but that whole midwestern scene was overflowing with kids trying to figure out this new deathcore sound. A lot of people went more grind, some went more hardcore, but Cholera leaned in to the weedly riffage. This album has some melody, and absolutely was the best example in my opinion. If you like your deathcore early 2000s style with a bit of early metalcore flair, TATI is the one!

The big thing for me on this album is the vocal performance. A lot of bands were doing cool breakdowns, but Cholera was the frontrunner because of just sheer vocal prowess. The absolute range on this album is insanity. Not to be outdone, I think the guitar performances on this absolutely cement it as an early 2000s classic. It’s so unlike listening to modern deathcore – not a single repeating part, no choruses or anything. It’s that riff-built old school style with just the right amount of melodic shred. Drums are everything you want, and absolutely on par with the double bass performances you’d expect from the time. Everything about this album is just so “early” sounding. I absolutely love it!

We can all agree that this whole body of work is nothing but YouTube breakdown video madness. It’s a classic. But this album checks so many other boxes for me too. The original artwork is ICONIC and Cholera was always “that band”. Everyone knew Cholera. And they’re still putting out stuff to this day! Absolutely one of the longest running early deathcore staples!

With these OG CDs being out of print for some time, this body of work is absolutely a peak WV experience. All new art, incredible music remasters and the band is absolutely one of my favorites from the time.

Speaking of the art: The reimagining for this one was done by none other than the legendaryDusty Peterson! As hard as it is to go head-to-head with that original art, I think Dusty absolutely gave this an incredible rework, while capturing everything about the original that made it iconic. It’s extra gore, extra real, and just extra sick. Additional layout elements and formatting were done by the incredible Lab 13, which I think add enough texture to really draw comparisons to the original. All those little digital bits and splatters! I think this turned out sick!

The audio was given a facelift once again by Zach at Third Eye Studios, and I think these sound better than ever.

This whole process of doing an instant drop in 2021 has been a long one – if it gives you any context, this is WV032S and Vessels cast was WV052. We’re finally about to see all these projects break loose, and I’m just so excited for you to hold these in person!
